Safe homes

Through the Family Preservation and Reunification Program we work with families whose children are at risk of losing their family placement or leaving their family or are already out of their family home through therapeutic, multiple-component interventions.

We work to keep children with their families and reduce the risk of child maltreatment by changing behaviours and increasing skills. The primary goal of the program is to either maintain the child’s placement or to re-establish the placement in the family home.

Eligibility

Families currently receiving support from the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD)

Starting the Journey – Referral and Intake Process

New referrals are sent by MCFD to the program manager for review. The manager looks at eligibility criteria and the needs of the family to determine the best therapeutic fit between available counsellors.

If service is accepted, the MCFD social worker schedules a foundation meeting with the family and the Family and Youth Outreach Counsellor.  In the foundation meeting, the social worker and counsellor review the terms of service, consent and confidentiality with the family, as well as build the goals for service in collaboration with the family.

From there, the counsellor conducts a needs assessment and works with the family and the MCFD social worker to develop an individualized service plan.

Family Preservation files are typically 6 months in length, with the possibility of extension.

Referral Form

MCFD faxes completed referral forms to Sea to Sky Community Services, with attention to Dr. McSkimming, Interim Manager of Adult and Family Services.
